The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing: Fifth Edition
The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing: Fifth Edition
The reviewer who said that this book is meant for the "serious beginner" said it best. This is not a fluffy book -- it's more like a 3-month investment course packed into a well-written small volume and designed to make the reader fully conversant in the language of the market. Before I picked up this book, I thought that the Dow was an exchange, like the NASDAQ. No joke. After I read it, I knew more about long-term investing strategies, market terminology, and identifying companies with value than any of my attorney colleagues who have invested in the market for years. Most individual investors seem to invest blindly in large- and mid-cap companies like Target or Apple and in mutual funds without conducting their own research. This book is for you if you want to understand not only why traders care about P/E ratios, but also how you hedge against inflated earnings calculations by analyzing other fundamental criteria, like profit margins; not only how a dividend yield is calculated, but why it matters in determining whether a stock is undervalued; and not only how Dow companies are chosen but also how to reap the benefits of leverage when investing in Dow companies.

That said, this book is not designed for swing traders or day traders. While Jason Kelly claims to espouse both value and growth approaches to investing, I'd say that the balance is 80% in favor of value (identifying good companies with long-term profitability). He explains the fundamentals of technical analysis, but his primary purpose is not to teach how to speculate or predict trends using Bollinger bands or stochastic curves. His point seems to be that an investor should use graphs and technical criteria as just one of her tools to know when to buy, how to limit the downside potential of leveraged investments.

Their isn't much self-promotion. The writing is so clear that it takes the author's personal philosophies out of the equation and focuses instead on the more broadly applicable teaching points (bullet-pointed, even, after each section). If identifying value is not a strategy that appeals to you, you won't like this book. The book is basically a love letter to Warren Buffett and has very little of Kelly jumping off the pages, other than when we mentions his own free newsletter and website in a list of a dozen or so other newsletters and websites. (By the way this list included Kelly's reviews of many stock screener tools, good financial magazines, and the most useful stock newsletters. I used it to build my internet favorites folder, which I look at everyday.)

This book provides a comprehensive treatment of fundamental investing concepts and strategies. You can turn to other, more detailed texts if you want to learn how to trade like a trader, not like an investor.
The Radical Leap: A Personal Lesson in Extreme Leadership
The Radical Leap: A Personal Lesson in Extreme Leadership
This book is a business parable - through the story of the main character Steve, a leadership consultant, in which he uncovers the principles of Extreme Leadership - the Radical LEAP:

"Love generates Energy, inspires Audacity, and require Proof. LEAP, you see, is simply the Extreme Leader's active, dynamic expression of love."

A quick entertaining, and educative read. What I particularly liked about this book is the handbook at the end that summarizes the key concepts and how to apply them on a regular basis.

Below are excerpts that I found particularly insightful:

1- "Leadership is the art of mobilizing others to want to struggle for shared aspirations."

2- "And we follow human beings; we don't follow idealized icones of unattainable perfection."

3- "If I love who we are, and if I love what we can be, then I'll love the process of how we get there. And in order to make it all happen, I will act boldly and courageously and I will, at time, fail magnificently. But my love demands that I try. Demands it."

4- "Relationships in the world of business are won in analogous ways...by paying nearly obsessive attention to the needs, desires, hopes, and aspirations of everyone who touches your business. By knowing not only when to stand firm on principle - there is such a thing as tough love - but also when to sacrifice some of your own short-term needs in order for us all to be successful in the long run. And by proving through your own actions that you really love your business, your customers, your colleagues, and your employees."

5- "Do what you love in the service of people who love what you do."

6- "...management has to stop pretending to be the Great Protector, but the rest of us have to stop askin' and expectin' them to be. We gotta get over the whole idea of 'them,' as a matter of fact. We need to hold ourselves accountable and stop looking to blame 'them' when things go wrong."

7- "You may not think that you can change the Whole World that we live in (and you may be wrong) but you can certainly change the world - small w - that you and yours live in: the world of your company, the world of your employees, the world of your industry, or the world of your family. To deny that is to deny your capability as a human being."

8- "Cultivate Love...Generate Energy...Inspire Audacity...Provide Proof"
Memos from the Chairman
Memos from the Chairman
Warren Buffet doesn't write many book introductions, which is the first sign you're reading something uncommonly great.

I cannot believe that I've never heard of this book. I read this in one sitting which is testament to it's brevity and content.

Alan C. Greenberg was CEO of Bear Stearns from 1978 to 1993. Over this time the firm grew c.10x employees and substantially outperformed rivals in terms of return on equity. This book collects the memos he sent to staff over that time.

Greenberg is funny (he has two imaginary management gurus from whom he quotes regularly), lacks the ego of most CEO book writers and is refreshingly anti management pseudo-science. One of my favourite paragraphs follows:

“We have lost 90% of our competitors over the last 20 years. Most of those managements were precocious; they were using those catchy techniques years ago. 35% used TQM 25% used CI 20% used BPR 10% used OTAODI. The remaining 10% did not use any sophisticated management tools, they were just extra special stupid. The [committee] suggested that we stick to common sense (CS) because catchy titles will never supplant “CS.” If you disagree, you are working at the wrong place.”

There's a lot of books that will tell you about the importance of repetition in leadership communication, but I can't think of one that so effectively shows the principle at work.

Should be required reading in any management training program.

Sticks on outside...would like it to stick on INSIDE to people cannot remove. Head is way too big...would be better slightly smaller (slightly!) Barely fit the window on my Honda CRV. Getting LOTS of "Thumps up!" here in Florida! No complaints, just people kidding me. If they don't like it, they can bite me, and are probably talking behind my back, but thus far a LOT of people LOVE IT!
George Washington Smith: Architect of the Spanish-Colonial Revival
George Washington Smith: Architect of the Spanish-Colonial Revival
A very well written book documenting the life of architect George Washington Smith, and the beautiful architecture that he created.

This book has a great balance of photos, renderings, floor plans and written history about GW Smith. It is clearly organized, and provides specific information about individual projects, his personality, and those of his clients and the associates he worked with.

It is a "Must Have" for designers and architects that admire and have a passion for 1920's Spanish Revival architecture.

I have personally used this book as a reference for a George Washington Smith restoration project in Montecito CA. It is invaluable for studying classic GW Smith, and incorporating the essence and spirit of his work into the renovation, new additions and landscape upgrades.

This box set alone is worth the price because it's the ONLY place you can get Moore's last film "Dolemite Explosion" aka "The Return of Dolemite"! A kick A** film that had it been truly been given its due would now be a classic! You also get the original Dolemite flick! Plus all other Moore's films except for "Monkey Hustle".

Very disappointed with the quality of the handle and the bristles themselves. I am returning them unused. The first 2 I pulled out for my self and my wife were not smooth, the handles and head/top part of the tooth brush were so rough and uneven in spots that I do not want to risk splinters in my mouth or hand!! It is like brushing with jagged wood or sandpaper. Bristles smell funny. Seller is a joke!!!!

Avengers: Infinity War - Everything You Must Know Before Watching
Waste of time. Chances are, if you're interested to watch this in the first place, they aren't going to tell you anything you don't already know. Terrible narration.

It's "Johann Schmidt" not "Johann Smith"
It's "Ragnarok" not "Ragnarack"
It's pronounced 'Nova Cor' not "Nova Corpse"

If they do something like this, the narrator should at least sound like he's educated or at least seem as though he knows what he's talking about.
Black List: Scot Harvath, Book 11
Black List: Scot Harvath, Book 11
In the forward, we are told the systems written about in the book are real.
Some are operational now and some will soon be operational.

When I was 80-100 pages in, I got on the PC and started doing searches. It was all there!
The programs, the systems, weren't made up. There are a LOT of things I was unaware of,
and I try to keep up with the news.

As I read the book, and followed the links turned up by code-names and program names,
I was watching Fox news and reading web news sites. After doing this for awhile,
I started to feel like Brad Thor was a Nostradamus, who had predicted our 2013 news, back in 2012!

After looking at things for a while, I also wondered why we needed a new NSA Data center in Utah, when we already have a huge NSA data center in San Antonio TX. Why so large, just to keep records? Data storage devices are getting smaller in size all the time.

Warning:
If you have been watching the political news closely this spring,
and like to do research, and read news on the web.
As you read Black List, you might find yourself feeling some very real paranoia,
when you look at your PC or iPhone.

At night when you want to sleep, you may start to wonder about those calls to your home number.
Those hang-up calls that went to voice mail. No message. Obviously just a bunch of wrong-numbers.
At 1AM, you might start asking yourself, why did I go with Verizon?
Were any of those wrong-numbers from one of those Boston Bombers, or one of their friends, over in Cambridge?

Anyways, I've read two other Brad Thor books, (The Last Patriot & State of the Union)
but 'Black List' is the best so far.
It's very much in phase with the bad news these days. These very scary days..

PS:
This book had a pretty big impact on me. I recently told some friends,
"Black List, should come with a tin-foil hat..
If you read it, while absorbing the daily news this past month,
you just might start thinking about conspiracy theories."
Thor (2020-) #6
Thor (2020-) #6
Excellent work by Cates! This is how the power of Thor should be written! Although, this is not how I imagined a being as powerful as Galactus would fall. Rest assured that he will return and I am curious as to how. And does Thor still have the power cosmic? Probably so especially going against those who will bring about his ending. I'm sticking with Cates work to find out.

My sons #1 favorite superhero is Spider-Man so I gave this five stars across the board. He was excited to see a surprise gift and the kicker with the pillowcase is the reverse side is Black Panther, his other favorite superhero. The material seemed fine as he lay on it...he’s normally a warm sleeper and prefer no pillow at all but this rested well under him.

I liked it. But i didn't love it. R.L.stine has done better. I suggest "the halloween party" if you want to see a good book. the goosebump books are really good too. This book was predictable and boring. UNEVENTFUL throughout most of the book. The good parts were here and there, there was some good parts. But i have read better from R.L. Stine and this is not one of his best. Don't let the awsome cover decive you.

Hidden: A Mitchum Story (BookShots)
I chose this book out of curiosity because I have the name Mitchum and am an author.
The book had a very slow start with lots of detail and very little significant plot. It was an enjoyable read with the action packed into the last portion of the book. The ending did not spell out a complete resolution for me which was a disappointment. Personally, even though it is a book shot book, I thought it needed another short chapter.

Case Closed: Season 1 Set
Case Closed: Season 1 Set
I've recently rediscovered anime in a big way. I started watching this later in the series on Netflix who have a small selection of subbed episodes. It was really fun and intriguing so I bought this set to see how it all began as I did not fully understand the back story. Top notch entertainment. Have ordered the rest of the available English dubs and am super excited to find Crunchyroll have a healthy range of later subbed episodes not available in a dubbed format.

An aside to those who hate the Anglicisation of the names and some expressions the English subtitles on this set are a transliteration of the Japanese version not the dub so you can either chill after work enjoying this show in your mother tongue dubbed. Or for the language purist on a Saturday night switch to the Japanese track and turn the subtitles on if you want a more authentic experience. Out of curiosity I actually watched a dubbed episode with the subtitles on just to see how it had been changed. Apart from a change of names and expressions (for instance in one episode where Conan and friends solve clues to find some stolen gold, bank robbers referred to as simply 'robbers' in the Japanese are referred to in the English dub as Italians), reflecting the difference of viewpoint between a largely homogeneous society (Japan) Vs a multicultural society (America) and the attempt made by Funimation to make this show as appeal to as wide as possible an audience in the English speaking world. Despite this it did not change the plot or the story and it was very easy to follow both as they all followed the same premise and plot. This is the same process that has successfully been applied to probably the most successful anime translation in the English speaking world, Pokémon.

Furthermore as a Christian who cannot read Greek or Hebrew this is something I am very used to so doesn't bother me at all. It's like the difference between the King James Bible and the New International Version, both convey the same message however in slightly different ways, but this does nothing to detract from the original meaning.

It is sad that it never got picked up for general English release after season 5 however it all boiled down to economics. At the time this was released in the 90s there was stiff competition with other Japanese fayre most notably Dragon Ball Z and Pokémon which meant this show ended up relegated to graveyard times where only the dedicated fans stuck with it. We see here the unfortunate side effect of capitalism and the free market. If there is no money in something, or they continue to bleed money as CC did, it will get dropped. I am so grateful that Funimation however authorized the release of these sets and would highly recommend any serious fan of anime to give at least season one a try.

The Da Vinci Code
The Da Vinci Code
Well, well... the book deserves all the accolades that have been lavished upon it!

For rarely does one come across a book where the author skillfully is able to take the reader along with him on a journey through space and time, in search of the Holy Grail! Another book on the Holy Grail (groan......!!!) Before u say that, let me confirm that this is not just another book on the topic. At least, for most of the uninitiated (me included) about the Holy Grail, this book is quite interesting. For, how many of us would have read that super-duper (?) bestseller of the 1970s on the subject, "Holy Blood, Holy Grail", by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh and Henry Lincoln? Not many, let me assure you.

In which case, this book is just the right spark to ignite your imagination, so much so that whenever in your life you happen to visit the Louvre, you will no doubt look for the "Inverted Pyramid", and also look for the 13th "man" in "The Last Supper"! All that notwithstanding, DVC is at its heart a murder mystery, but with the murder inter-twined into such far-reaching implications that the reader cannot but be amazed by the width of the canvas portrayed by Brown. He excels himself at this genre of story-writing. Those of you who have read "Angels & Demons" would no doubt concur with me here :) As far as the length of the book is concerned, did you know that the complete book, most of the 450+ pages of it are crammed into a time period of less than two days?!? Amazing how much action can pass without time passing by :) It is almost impossible to read this story and not come out of it feeling as if it all happened right in front of you, and was happening for the past so long a time period, when you sadly realize that, like every dream, even this story must come to an end.

Ah, that brings me to the climax of the story... just to mention here that the identity of the chief antagonist of the story is a letdown, one realizes that this is perhaps the weakest link of the story. But the climax... yes, now that is one satisfying portion of the story. For, after all that running around, and everything falling into place (almost too!!) perfectly, the truth (as depicted in this book only, mind you) is quite satisfying... and rewarding in itself, if you follow the philosophy of the Holy Grail given by Brown. Err........., did I hear you say that I missed out on those brilliantly crafted puzzles? But of course, no review of DVC is complete without a commendation of the puzzles given in the book, which all fall into place like a jigsaw-puzzle pieces. But for them to fit into place, the research that must've gone behind it all is immensely impressive :)

A must read - and unlike many other ppl, I would add here, not just on long flights, lazy weekends, or holidays... but when, you want to re-live the excitement of joie-de-vivre, for it is a wonderful tale, told by a wonderful author, on a wonderful subject... Let me end this piece by quoting the legend of the Holy Grail... if u end up reading this book and are fascinated by the story, remember... "...you do not find the Grail, the Grail finds you..."
Boots & Buckles (Ugly Stick Saloon Book 9)
Boots & Buckles (Ugly Stick Saloon Book 9)
Boots & Buckles by Myla Jackson is a fantastic contemporary western romance. Ms. Jackson has once again provided readers with a book that is well written and loaded with fabulous characters. Grant and his rodeo partner had a menage affair with Mona and promised to come return. They never returned and all she got was a break-up from Grant over the phone. The rodeo is back in town and so is Grant and his new partner, Sam. Grant, Mona and Sam's story is loaded with drama, humor and melt your e-reader heat. I enjoyed reading Boots & Buckles and look forward to my next book by Myla Jackson. Boots & Buckles is book 9 of the Ugly Stick Saloon Series but can easily be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I read a print copy of this book.

Cowboy Resurrected
Elle James
Harlequin Intrigue, Sep 17 2013, $5.50
ISBN: 9780373697182

"Cowboy Resurrected." Pregnant Sophia Carranza flees her Mexican home to escape from her ex-fiancé ruthless Antonio Martinez and his cartel. Still grieving the deaths of his family, former Wild Oak Canyon Sheriff Thorn Drennon, now works undercover for Hank Derringer's Covert Cowboys, Inc. He captures the illegal crosser who he knows needs to be left with the authorities. Instead Thorn follows his instincts and vows to keep her safe even if it jeopardizes his mission and job. He soon realizes he underestimated the cost as the monster and his horde pursue her; placing his life and eventually his heart at risk.

"Killer Body." In Webb County, former Special Ops soldier Dawson Gray still feels remorse and guilt for not being there when his wife and baby died. He loathes his Lone Star assignment to protect amnesiac Savvy Jones, a murder suspect as he does not want the responsibility. However, as hit men target Savvy while she tries to remember killing the son of a drug cartel kingpin and shooting herself in the head, Dawson risks his life to keep her safe.

Though the males' second chance theme is identical, the getting there differs even as both entries are exciting romantic suspense. Cowboy Resurrected is the fourth CCI thriller (see Bodyguard Under Fire, Taking Aim and Triggered) while Killer Body is a reprint of a Lone Star Agency tale.

The Tale of the Body Thief: The Vampire Chronicles, Book 4
The Tale of the Body Thief: The Vampire Chronicles, Book 4
This should have been a fun side story - the iconic Lestat's tangential side adventure with David Talbot rather than any of the host of vampires which Rice has introduced in the series so far (brilliant). The writing meanders a bit too much but the storyline is entertaining and a blend of predictable and unpredictable. Louis and Claudia make appearances as well. To those ends, this is a refreshing and lighter tale after the intensity & density of Queen of the Damned (which is pure gold).

However, there are 2 big issues that detract from Lestat's adventure. These either did not age well from her initial intent, or somehow Rice thinks her audience will gobble up without question: literal rape, and figurative rape. Lestat is flamboyant and narcissistic but has been depicted thus far with a varying degree of compassion for humanity in general (he feeds only on those who hurt others) and for those he 'loves' (i.e., Gabrielle and Louis). He's entertaining and deviant--all Id and very little Ego, so to speak. But the character here veers so far from that into intentional and enjoyable harm to those who he loves or who don't deserve it. I was troubled for quite awhile after reading the scene where he rapes (literally rapes - she screams 'no') a random waitress while he's human (and it makes even less sense because if it's about desire, he has a consensual relationship with a female later on). Lestat even 'feels bad' and brings her jewelry at the end (so he knows what he did, and uses the term 'rape' several times), but seems to have no concept of the psychological impact of what he's done. I was also troubled (but less so) at the end when he violates David's wishes and turns him, ending his life without his consent (again, David protests and yells 'no'). He also burns Louis's house down, among other things. However, he keeps a nice dog alive so there's that.

In an otherwise lighter and entertaining story, these incidents take Lestat in a somewhat bizarre direction. I wanted to read more about David--her writing is much more lively when discussing David, and he's fascinating. You're also rooting for David & Lestat to hook up (which they don't). But too much focus on Lestat and the rest of the story just doesn't congeal. Maybe it's some attempt at extending the fact that he didn't really have a choice in being turned against his will (?), or saying 'hey Lestat if you were human your actions wouldn't fly' but she took Lestat from flamboyant 'brat prince' to callous and a little bit psychopath. He's more interested in demonstrating his power over people than anything else. I was going to keep reading the series, but I'm not interested anymore. Can't root for Lestat after this.

YU-GI-OH! - Gauntlet Launcher (MP14-EN025) - Mega Pack 2014 - 1st Edition - Ultra Rare
Purchased this product from CoreTCG and this is a pretty decent card. I needed some Rank 6 XYZs for my Monarch deck so this was definitely a must need. Obviously Constellar Ptolemy M7 is a much better choice but that card costs way too much and this card is much cheaper. Granted Constellar Ptolemy M7 is a little bit better and looks much cooler. Constellar Ptolemy M7 also has more attack but Gauntlet Launcher does have more defense and you will be using it in defense mode for the most part especially when Silent Honor Ark is a card. As long as Silent Honor Ark is a card I would rather have Gauntlet Launcher on the field over Constellar Ptolemy M7.

This card is also good in Hieratic Dragons and Inzektors, two decks that are basically dead but I enjoy them both! This card kinda works in Chaos Dragons another deck I own but it has more versatility in my Monarch deck.

Overall if you run a deck with level 6 monsters this is definitely a rank 6 XYZ you should pick up! If you can also, pick up a Constellar Ptolemy M7. That dragon still looks cooler than this robot lol.

I just received it, so I can't speak to its durability. However, this is a beautiful flag. While I'm not a huge fan of the typical dyed-in patterns on synthetic fabric (like the Zia is on this one), it is very well made and, in fact, is made in the USA. In my opinion, all flags should me made locally, wherever they represent. This version by Annin is an excellent example. UV resistant, hefty double to quad stitching on the edges, and a very nice grommeted pole edge to hang it by. I will no longer cheap out on flags from now on, this company exemplifies quality.

The mask is very badly made. It's hard plastic and no protection whatsoever where it touches the nose. Very sharp edges. Even if my son wears it just for less than a minute he gets a big & painful cut on his nose and it stays there for more than a week. It almost looks like he's bleeding. Not a kids product. Sword is too small and cheap plastic. Overall not worth the price.
Kitchen Garden Revival: A modern guide to creating a stylish small-scale, low-maintenance edible garden
Kitchen Garden Revival: A modern guide to creating a stylish small-scale, low-maintenance edible garden
I've had a vague idea of what I want in a garden, but this book gave my amorphous guesswork a NAME. A "kitchen garden," that's EXACTLY the kind of garden I want. (Countdown to our move to a new place with garden space is going!) Nicole Burke brings life to an idea that's so novel, and yet feels so obvious at the same time -- like "why has it taken us gardeners so long to figure this out?"

Unlike most gardening books, KGR doesn't waste 1/4 of the book on super basic gardening how-tos. It goes over it briefly but it assumes (correctly) that you aren't reading this book to learn how to seed start. What it teaches you is how to figure out WHAT to grow in your particular climate, WHEN to grow it, and -- most notably -- how to POSITION those plants in your kitchen garden to be both functional and beautiful.

The concept here, of taking decorative landscaping design concepts and applying them to the food garden -- rather than stuffing the food garden in the back corner of the yard because it lacks the aesthetics of the rose garden -- is unique amongst gardening books. Not only are you going to learn how to create a stunning lush garden space of your own, it's going to be made out of plants that are USEFUL, not just beautiful.

I'd rate it 11/10 if I could. I bought this book on a whim -- I heard Burke on a podcast I listened to a while back and the title here sounded familiar -- and I can say it's easily already one of the most useful books on gardening I've ever bought (and i've bought many!)

Carly Simon - No Secrets (Classic Album)
Carly is and always will be in my opinion the best female artist of the 70's. and other decades as well..This film is ve3ry good, the only bad thing is it wasn't long enough and there is not enough of them!
Level Up: One Up Series, Book 1
Level Up: One Up Series, Book 1
After the disappointment of my second read through of READY PLAYER ONE, this story of a guy who finds himself trapped in a video game world was a more relaxing and humorous breath of fresh air.

Marcus is the down trodden office work we follow as the negatives of his life are laid out before us. Most of it relates to his place of work and the boss who makes things tough for him.

LEVEL UP is a brisk read, not because of page count, but the pace that it whisks along. In a lot of stories this could be annoying, but it works well here giving it the feel of a video game with each chapter (or Level) revolving around the next game type, game level, of boss fight. There is a sense of escalation throughout and the plot rarely pauses or steps back.

The humour is there but not in your face, with Marcus' mate Carlos standing in as comedy side-kick, while most of the chuckles come from references to the various video game styles and nuances the book parodies (and out right mocks!). And unlike READY PLAYER ONE, it doesn't over explain its references because it know's I'll either get it or just carry on.

There are issues (some grammar needs tidying up and a scene involving speed dating felt out of place) but all in all this is an enjoyable and amusing read that doesn't ask much of it's reader other than to have fun.

Lenovo makes a great laptop and I love it, BUT...it connected to the wifi when I first unboxed it, but after that initial time/updates, I am unable to connect to ANY wifi (restaurant, coffee shop, hotel, etc.) without using a USB wifi adapter.
I tried updating/rolling back the drivers; deleting/reinstalling the network adapter; doing a network reset; winsock reset and DNS flush; turning off firewall and anti-virus, nothing works.
I contacted the seller for assistance but have received zero response.
