"It Always Seems Impossible Until It's Done.": Motivation for Dreamers & Doers
I love this little book. The best way to utilize it in my opinion is to simply open it up anywhere and read a few quotes. Every morning I will read a page or two to get my day motivated. I've given three away as gifts already. It's filled with great quotes. Only thing I'm not thrilled about it is there doesn't seem to be any order of the way the quotes are organized.

I Went Down to St. James Infirmary: Investigations in the shadowy world of early jazz-blues in the company of Blind Willie McTell, Louis Armstrong, ... where did this dang song come from anyway?
I Went Down to St. James Infirmary: Investigations in the shadowy world of early jazz-blues in the company of Blind Willie McTell, Louis Armstrong, ... where did this dang song come from anyway?
Robert Harwood does a very good job of tracing the roots of the legendary American song St. James Infirmary, finding similarities with the 18th century British folksong The Unfortunate Rake and also the American ballad The Streets of Laredo. He also uses the history of this song to show the beginnings of the music industry's creation of Race Recordings, the recording of African American artists for sales to the Black community. In addition, he uses a copyright trial over the name of the song to illustrate how folk musicians borrowed and changed music and lyrics to make songs their own, and how the music industry used copyrights on sheet music and recordings to profit from the musicians' work.

For those who want to research these topics further, this is a good piece of scholarship with extensive notes, a three page bibliography, and four appendices. I found the writing could have benefited from the hand of a good editor as whole paragraphs appear more than once in the text. It was an interesting and enjoyable read for a fan of this classic song that has been recorded by many musicians in a diverse range of genres including folk, blues and jazz.
The Complete Louis Armstrong Decca Sessions 1935-1946 Mosaic #243 [Limited Collectors Edition, Original Recording Remastered, Box Set]
The Complete Louis Armstrong Decca Sessions 1935-1946 Mosaic #243 [Limited Collectors Edition, Original Recording Remastered, Box Set]
A very complete catalogue of Armstrong's often forgotten work from the 30s and 40s. While there is, admittedly, lots of novelty material and the band is not up to the same level as other great swing bands like Basie's, Ellington's or Goodmans', there are also some real masterpieces here. Alongside new renditions of old favorites, there are great takes on tunes from the great American songbook and some new compositions. In particular I think "Ev'ntide", "Swing that Music", "Solitude", "Jubilee" and "Wolverine Blues" belong among the finest recordings Armstrong ever made. The Hot Fives and Sevens this ain't, but it's indispensable for Armstrong lovers and a great buy for any jazz lover.
The liner notes were detailed and informative and the packaging is also quite nice. Go on, get it!

Excursions in World Music, Seventh Edition: eBook & mp3 Value Pack
The web interface would get stuck on a page when i was scrolling through the book. If i wanted to lookup a page that was, say, 150 pages prior to my current page, i'd drag the scroll control to the left. Often it would get stuck on a page with a table.

Also, there was no apparent way to access the MP3s for this book, which were critical for understanding the material.
One Man's Art: The MacGregors
One Man's Art: The MacGregors
Somehow I ended reading this book out of order in the MacGregor series, but it still seemed complete and whole without the context of the other stories. Roberts always spins an incredible, happily ever after tale, which is what make her audience clamor for the next book. If there is any criticism at all, she might have provided just a tiny bit more time explaining why the male protagonist was so surly and moody. But really, it is a Nora Roberts novel. What's not to love.
The Berenstain Bears and Mama's New Job
The Berenstain Bears and Mama's New Job
Berenstein bears are that perfect family endearing to both kids and adults alike. A heart warming story of the anxiety that sets in when mama wants to run a business, how the bear family support her, and how they all feel happy and proud of mama bear's new venture. A classic story to read to little ones, more so if you work outside home.
Funko Advent Calendar: The Nightmare Before Christmas - 24 Pocket Pop! Vinyl Figures (2020)
Funko Advent Calendar: The Nightmare Before Christmas - 24 Pocket Pop! Vinyl Figures (2020)
I agree with the first review - too many duplicates. I was hoping this would be more of a Halloweentown comprehensive collection, and there are some great figures, but just so disappointing that they didn't take the opportunity to showcase some of the great secondary characters. I'm listing what was included below:

Jack
1. Pumpkin King (pumpkin head)
2. Regular outfit
3. Regular outfit with snowflake in hand
4. In nightdress
5. Snowman
6. Snowman (glitter)
7. Santa Clause

Zero
8. Regular
9. Glow in the dark? (Semi translucent)
10. Glitter

Sally
11. Holding rose
12. Sitting down

Oogie Boogie
13. Tan
14. Green (different expression)

Others
15. Mayor
16. Dr Finkelstein
17. Lock
18. Shock
19. Barrel
20. Behemoth (ax in head)
21. Harlequin Demon
22. Clown (with a tear away face)
23. Scary Teddy
24. Santa Clause

I knocked it down to three stars for lack of diversity, but even still, it's a good value (at the $40 price) for the figures you get. Just wish they would have included a vampire, witch, wolfman, under sea gal, devil, etc instead of so many duplicates (absolutely NO need for 3 Zeros).
Mystic Journey to India
Mystic Journey to India
I didn't realize what I was watching. I just clicked on a PRIME video about India. What else do you do on a COVID-19 QUARANTINE SUNDAY??? LOL
At first, I thought I was just getting a front row seat to a travel-vlog-ish episode on India - THE ONLY country that's been calling my name to visit for more than 30 years. As I kept watching, I began to realize what I had gotten a "free" ticket to... Magic. Mysticism. and a bit of Mania. I've heard of people in India being told to spend LOTS of their hard-earned money on "removals" and this seemed to be one of them, documented for all the world to witness. It wasn't until I heard the words (paraphrased) "IF YOU GIVE TO OTHERS THEY WILL OFTEN THINK GOOD THOUGHTS ABOUT YOU. THOUGHTS ARE THINGS/ACTION - THESE THOUGHTS WILL UPLIFT THE GIVER AND HELP BREAK THEIR KARMIC BONDS" ....... THIS is THE SECRET People! Giving so that others THINK GOOD THOUGHTS Whenever They Think of You. It brings even more good things your way! (Blame it on the fact that I'd watched "THE CELESTINE PROPHECY" just before watching this. I connected the dots.)
I did find it disturbing that there was a "Section" in one of the Temples that SEGREGATED Women from Men and that their section was on the sidelines while the men were allowed to take center seats. Shameful. As spiritual as India is, just like the charlatans among the spiritual communities, they ruin it by causing separation/segregation/castes/labels/disenfranchising instead of embracing equality - for Everyone. If it was a woman instead of a man taking this journey, I don't believe she would have been treated with such reverence or good fortune. I'd LOVE to put it to the test!
Make: Electronics: Learning Through Discovery
Make: Electronics: Learning Through Discovery
I am about a third of the way through this book and I am loving it. This is the perfect introduction to hands-on electronics. I was an engineering student in college (although not electrical engineering) so I was always kind of upset that after spending countless nights of my life doing all sorts of crazy math problems with respect to circuits, I didn't know something as simple as how a relay works, or how to build anything except maybe a simple circuit with a lightbulb and a resistor. I could design and build an RC circuit and calculate its time-constant but why in God's name I would ever NEED to build an RC circuit was beyond me...
No more. This book lets you know that its safe to rip open a relay and see exactly why it works. It will give you a circuit design and then have you build it. It will explain why something is or isn't working, and why. This won't make you an expert in electronics, it is definitely on the simple side of things (like algebraic simplifications of mathematical models that are actually rooted in calculus or differential equations), but that's exactly what I was looking for. This book will empower you to build things. I am reading it side by side with the Electricity & Magnetism chapters of my old Physics textbook so I can make the connections with the real theory and the nastier side of the math, but I really couldn't be happier. In spite of years of college, this book is just now making me feel like I know something about electronics.
Also, I recommend buying the kit that's sold for this book because it will save you a little money and a LOT of time. Amazon has been out of stock of it forever, but I went to the closest Radioshack and they had it for $75. Other than that, you will need to buy Digital Multimeter, a pair of wire strippers that can deal with 22-gauge wire, a pair of wire-cutters, a pair of needlenose pliers, and a set of precision screw drivers. Seems steep but if you plan on making use of your new-found knowledge for the foreseeable future, you will be using these tools well after you've worked through this book.
