The Warren Buffett CEO: Secrets from the Berkshire Hathaway Managers
The Warren Buffett CEO: Secrets from the Berkshire Hathaway Managers
From the outset I had the feeling that this book would be something special. In a typical Buffett book the author sits back in his armchair, reads some historical Berkshire annual reports and then attempts to rehash and paraphrase the words of Buffett. Miles has taken the effort to physically travel across the country to interview some of Berkshire's finest managers. If Buffett is the brains of the organisation, then his managers are its heartbeat. They keep its lifeblood, namely cash, pumping through the organisation on a daily basis. This book provides some penetrating insight into one of the most important yet arcane aspects of company valuation, which is evaluating quality of management. Some of my notes on the CEOs follow:

Tony Nicely, head of operations at GEICO - The most striking thing about Tony is that he treats GEICO as his company even with no direct share ownership. The company forms an integral part of his life and when that type of manager is combined with a high quality business the results are very potent

Lou Simpson, investment manager at GEICO - Lou has an edge because he is able to obtain differential insight into a company which has not yet been factored into the share price. He maintains this edge by thinking and reading voraciously. He is in the office by 6am and stays until 7:30pm - that is a lot of reading and thinking, almost certainly more than his competitors. He evaluates companies both qualitatively and quantitatively, he is interested in both the business and the people

Ajit Jain - Ajit is obviously a very intelligent man since he is charged with pricing super catastrophe insurance. Yet he says "I can take a deal that I've spent 10 days trying to analyse and give it to him, and in 5 minutes he's two steps ahead of me...Warren is a lot smarter, he has a lot more experience and he can make judgement calls. There is no dimension I can think of where I am anywhere close to where he is"

Rose Blumkin - Once again the incredible work ethic shines through and it is emphasised that Buffett invests in people first and businesses second

Frank Rooney, CEO of H. H. Brown - When acquiring the business, Buffett said "Don't any of that stuff from Goldman Sachs, just send me the audited numbers for the last couple of years". Rooney says "Warren hadn't seen a factory and he hadn't met any of the people. Why the hell did he buy a shoe company". Warren subsequently said "Much of my enthusiasm for this purchase came from Frank's willingness to continue as CEO. Like most of our managers, he has no financial need to work but does so because he loves the game and likes to excel"

Melvyn Wolff, Star Furniture - This interview illustrates Buffett's meticulous eye for detail. In examining three years of financial statements he observed and queried a slightly different wording of a footnote between one year and the next. This shows his incredible memory and recall. The interview also provides some insight into his valuation methods. Regarding the furniture business, the author mentions that Buffett purchases the company valued "at its current annual sales"

Susan Jacques, Borsheim's - Buffett needed only 10 minutes and five questions to determine his purchase price "What are sales? What are gross profits? What are expenses? What's in inventory? Are you willing to stay on?"

My primary criticism is that the book seems unbalanced. Not one negative thing was said and although working for Berkshire must be very good I can't imagine it is perfect. I think a review of mistakes can be just as insightful as review of the wonderful aspects and I'm disappointed that this was not present. Overall a recommended read.
The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of the Company That Is Connecting the World
The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of the Company That Is Connecting the World
What features of facebook led to its instant success, and who deserves the credit? Why has facebook continued to grow while other social networks faltered at earlier stages? How did facebook make money at various stages of development? What caused facebook's various missteps? Does facebook really care about privacy? David Fitzpatrick gives convincing answers to these questions that have been hotly debated among users for years. The book suffers at times from gushy editorializing, but overall the reporting is balanced (with a few exceptions), and readers can weigh the facts on their own.

Fitzpatrick identifies several features that differentiated facebook from the rest. School networks offered a controlled community. Users felt comfortable projecting their true identities online in this setting. The site was easy to use, and didn't try to do too much too soon. Long-run growth was always a stronger priority than short-term ad revenue. Mark Zuckerberg's immaturity during his college age years is clear, but he ultimately nails the most important strategic decisions. He was not a mere caretaker of a simple idea at the right time.

The book touches on the personal conflicts made famous by the Social Network movie. The motives behind Eduardo Saverin's sacking are carefully reported. In contrast, key facts are missing in Fitzpatrick's treatment of the Winklevoss/Narendra ConnectU lawsuit. Fitzpatrick makes a convincing case that ConnectU's business plan was inferior to thefacebook's, but he glosses over how Zuckerberg sabotaged their site for months. Zuckerberg's AOL IMs from this era (referenced in the 12/30/10 NYT) reveal he viewed them as a competitor, and this calls into question Fitzpatrick's judgment that Zuckerberg was merely guilty of being "rude" and "uncooperative." Future editions of the book should incorporate more accurate information about the case.

Another weakness is the book's failure to address contradictions in facebook's views on privacy. For example, he asserts in the prologue that facebook "has always been explicitly conceived and engineered by Zuckerberg and colleagues as a tool to enhance your relations with your real-world friends" But later we learn that Zuckerberg is always pushing people to be more transparent, and that voyeurism was part of facebook's success from the beginning at Harvard. Who seriously believes facebook has never encouraged voyeurism outside of your circle of real friends?

Yet the book's most lasting impression is Zuckerberg's resolve in prioritizing facebook's utility over its profits. Knowing how close friend Sean Parker lost control of his past ventures, Zuckerberg is careful not to let future investors take control of his baby. Understanding this is also crucial to understanding the controversy behind facebook's delays in going public. Without Zuckerberg's patience, facebook would have been far less useful as a tool of Viacom, News Corp, Yahoo, Microsoft, or Wall Street. For this, Zuckerberg is worthy of the rosy picture painted in this book, despite his sins.
Professional Idiot: A Memoir
Professional Idiot: A Memoir
I'm not much of a "reader". I enjoy quick articles in magazines and have the kind of ADD that won't allow me to stick to a story day after day. It usually takes me a month or two to get through a novel and I quickly lose interest.

This book, however, I finished in 2 days. I read it every chance I could. It was such an easy read, it was true and honest but not boasting, and Steve-O is right to the point with his stories with just the right amount of details.

I learned so much about Steve-O that confirmed that this guy is a genuine good guy.

Great book and I would highly recommend this to ANYONE, not just Jackass fans. Kids who have attention problems, kids with a insanely rich dad that is not around all the time, kids with an alcoholic in the family, kids who are constantly moving from place to place, people who can't seem to find others who understand them, people dealing with a dying family member, alcohol and drug addicts could all relate to this book (I could easily go on and on about who could relate to the problems Steve-O was challenged with throughout his whole life).

Steve-O's book has a theme of survival in so many situations, but mainly the message that someone could get out of this is the value of perseverance. Believing in yourself when nobody else does. Never giving up on yourself even though things don't work out the first, second, or tenth time.

Get this book.
The Game of Life and How to Play It
The Game of Life and How to Play It
Does it work? You betcha, yes!

After beginning only the first chapter, I decided to follow suit on one of the anecdotes the author shares --as an example to the methodology at work here as a means to manifestation. Several pages in she references a time when during one of her daily travels she happened to be walking somewhere and stopped and found herself gazing at a lovely rose tree displayed inside the window of a florist. She wished to receive one, and stated and intended it so, exactly as she teaches in the book, and went about her merry way. A few days later, she was hosting Easter, when she received a pre gathering delivery from one of her guests...the rose tree...turns out the guest actually had requested that Easter lilies be sent, but the florist ~mixed~ the order up, and the author ended up with exactly what she had intended.

Well..having read that, I decided to put that exact suggestion into use, intending that I would receive flowers in the next few days-- figuring Start small, with no actual attachment to the outcome.

This afternoon, my husband called, saying he was hitting the grocery store on the way home, did I want anything? Between the time of the call and his arrival home, I remembered the flowers, and thought to myself, oh good, hopefully he will pick up the standard white roses we often grab to put on the table in our kitchen area, but without my prompting.. In he came with all the bags, and no flowers. I wasn't phased, figured, I'd maintain my intention, and that was that.

A minute or two later he went back out to close the garage door or whatever. I, at this point, was busy going through the mail, so had my back to him. When I happened to turn back around to say something, there in my line of sight were, yes, you already guessed it-- flowers! Not the white roses, but instead an exquisite arrangement of red and white roses mixed in with branches of cherry blossoms, and a lovely assortment of beautiful flowers. I was absolutely and utterly stunned, and still am. I don't know about you, but that was all the proof I could possibly need, and will be continuing my studies with Ms Florence Scovel Shinn, and this book!

I do want to add --- I have been avidly and actively reading quite a few of the prayers in Susan Shumsky's books as well--- they are profound in the depth of their power, and I cannot recommend them enough - Instant Healing and Miracle Prayers are my go to's; I have to give additional credit where it is unquestionably due. The prayers are truly healing in removing a multitude of blocks, fears, and other issues in my life, and I'm now a strict believer and dedicated to reading them aloud at least once daily. Some of those prayers deal with healing our mindsets of lack to not feeling we deserve the highest and best things that God/the Universe/our higher selves/whatever higher power you believe in has to offer. And will offer us if we remember to ask, work on our mindsets in thinking and speaking positively, and trusting that no matter what, the outcome will come about as good, if not better than we could ever have expected (white roses vs gorgeous bouquet), with focus, surrender, and persistence in following the steps ... Start simple, go from there, and you can count on seeing the results in the blink of an eye as I did...

Aretha's Jazz
Aretha's Jazz
Look, don't get me wrong here, I LOVE Aretha. But this CD, IMHO falls short in it's entirety. HOWEVER, Aretha singing "Crazy, He Calls Me Crazy" is incomparable and simply glorious. It is in my top three of best Jazz Vocals of all time. On the other end of the spectrum, her treatment of "Moody's Mood" does not do the tune justice at all. All in all, as anyone knows, Aretha Franklin is one of God's gifts to the world of music, with a voice and a style beyond compare. It's just that this recording, with the exception of the aforementioned tune "Crazy, He Calls Me Crazy" is quite forgettable.
The Best of Louis Armstrong - The Christmas Collection: 20th Century Masters
The Best of Louis Armstrong - The Christmas Collection: 20th Century Masters
There are some great tunes on this cd. This is a family favorite in our house. I find that the older I get the more I like the way Louis Armstrong sings White Christmas. Of course there's Cool Yule on here, one of my favorites, Zat You, Santa Claus? - another favorite. And I like the insturmental Jingle Bells on here as well. Louis Armstrong has some interesting "friends" on this cd.
Rubie's Dragon Ninja Child's Backpack Weapon Set, Multicolor
Rubie's Dragon Ninja Child's Backpack Weapon Set, Multicolor
Great set for the price - but be prepared for the weapons to split almost immediately. My son bought this set without us knowing and then when it arrived, we agreed that he could pay for it with his own money given that the weapons were cheap and somewhat flexible (and with ample promises not to whack his brother and so forth).

So here is what you get: Out of the box, the swords were slightly bent - this was due to the packaging from the manufacturer, not Amazon. The plastic is very thin and the weapons are constructed out of two halves, so the seam splits easily after the weapon bends a few times. Once our kids realized that the swords bent, they started to bend them intentionally, by the way. Of course, they were disappointed that the weapons seem to be breaking, but not enough to actually stop playing with them. The handles to the swords are actual thread wrapped around the end, so the swords feel nice to hold and look nice. These have held up really well, I am surprised to say. The harness is made of webbing and there is a plastic holder that sits comfortably between one's shoulder blades. My sons like the harness - they add it to their TMNT costumes and sometimes also pretend to be (human) ninjas. Interestingly, given how low quality these toys are, we are not worried about the boys hurting themselves or others. So, 3.5 stars... cheap, but well-loved.
Heritage Acacia Wood Pizza Peel, Great for Homemade Pizza, Cheese and Charcuterie Boards - 22" x 14"
Heritage Acacia Wood Pizza Peel, Great for Homemade Pizza, Cheese and Charcuterie Boards - 22" x 14"
I had to send my first pizza peel back to Amazon because the edges were really rough. In these places, the varnish coating had soaked into the grain of the wood, so there were many areas which were matt, rather than satin finished. Because the wood was so rough, there would have been problems cleaning the item and removing bacteria. My second one has just arrived and it is nearly as bad as the first one. If this is what they are all designed to be like - I certainly wouldn’t have called the peel ‘smooth finished’ like in the Amazon product description. I'm in two minds as to if I'm returning the second one for a refund or not.

If it was me, I’d have given the peel another sanding after the first coat of varnish, so that where the grain had been raised, it could be smoothed down before a second coat of varnish was added - then it would have got a 4* or 5* review and have been good value. I note that the 5* reviews on Amazon are from customers who had been given one to review. Not saying they are wrong, but I'd love to know what they 'honestly' thought of my peels.

The quality of wood is good - and it looks good. However, it is much bigger than I'd expected. If you plan to use it as a bread or cheese board you CANNOT CUT ON IT without it ruining the surface (so says the care leaflet delivered with the peel). The quality of the finish and dreadful customer service makes it a 2* and not very good value for money.

If you buy one of these, you will be inundated with messages from the Co-owner, Michael Tecku asking you to leave "awesome feedback on Amazon." He says that they want 5* reviews - and to contact their customer support team if there are problems - as they don't want bad reviews.

I DID NOT GIVE MY PERMISSION TO BE ADDED TO SKY SOLUTIONS MAILING LIST!

So I did contact their support team via email with a detailed description of the problem. No response.
I emailed again. No response.
I emailed again and got a message saying "Hey there, We emailed you a few days ago requesting some additional information to help solve your problem. When you're free, get back to us so we can make sure we get your issue solved."
But I didn't get the email asking for additional information, neither was it in my junkman folder - so no idea what they wanted.
I emailed back, asking what info they needed. No response.
I emailed again. No response.

I'm now leaving this review. So, sorry Michael, I gave you the opportunity to rectify my problems, but you blew it. My review will not be glowing enough for Amanda Ricci to read it and go on to save the world.

Hidden Star (Stars of Mithra Book 1)
Hidden Star (Stars of Mithra Book 1)
Bailey James walked into PI Cade Parris' office with a bag of money, a 38 cal. gun and a very large blue diamond. Problem is she has no memory of who she is or how she came to be in possession of these things. Cade is instantly in love with her and she feels a very strong attraction to him.
She has very dark nightmares that give her bits and pieces. She is afraid she has stolen the stuff, maybe killed someone and she wants Cade to help her find the answers before going to the police.Cade protects her, and going step by step, starts putting the pieces back together. Bailey is extremely honest and trusting. Cade believes she is innocent. Call it a hunch.
The blue diamond is one of three. She has mailed the other two to her two most trusted friends which has now placed them in danger. Someone wants those diamonds back at any cost. One person is already dead.
An interesting who-dun-nit. Book one in a series of 3. I would recommend it.

Is there anyone in the world who doesn't like Louis L'Amour? This was a book that had slipped through my fingers in the past. All the others have been read. This one is unique for L'Amour due to it being set in the 12th century. It's am amazing book with the main character, Kerbouchard, traveling and increasing the readers' information about the world in that time. The beginning of the book has maps, so the reader can look to see what has changed and not just read about the adventures. The adventures are fantastically written. The characters are interesting. And, if that isn't enough, there is a note from L'Amour at the end of the book stating why he wrote the book. There is a list of ancient sites that are still standing. It was interesting to go to Google and search for each of those sites. As well travelled as I am, these sites were a mystery to me. Imagine putting an entire long book together about these sites! It is astonishing. The book is filled with adventure, too.The battles and information about ancient weapons was great. I loved this book, and it's an old one. *This was a public library book.*
Congo (Spanish Edition)
Congo (Spanish Edition)
Congo opens on a grizzly gorilla attack on a group of explorers. Crichton goes on in telling how the search and or rescue party gets there and the horrific things they experience. With the company of Amy the most advanced ape in the sense of sign language, they learn many things about gorilla life and their past. From Chrichton I've also read Airframe, Sphere, Jurassic Park and The Lost World; personally this is my least favorite of the books. I admit the first few pages grab you with quick and intense action, but the main part of the book, I thought, was extremely boring, no action what so ever not even flared emotions. Written in 1980 it is expected to have out dated technology information, in fact some of things they mention weren't even fathomable then, but now are a part of everyday life and I made a note of that in the back of my mind, but while reading it seemed as though it was in bold print and it simply got annoying. Don't get me wrong it is a well writen book, it's just that I feel is other books are definately more worth reading. The ending as in all books is the most exciting part of the book, overflowing with action that almost makes up for the eye drying middle; almost.

Nice pajamas! Soft and fit very true to size. I just wish the shirts were an inch longer; my 6 yr old boy is very slim and has a long torso and I can tell these aren’t going to fit him for as long as others because they’ll become belly shirts before he outgrows the width! Hopefully they won’t shrink too much when dried...
Farberware Commercial Nonstick Frying Pan / Fry Pan / Skillet - 10 Inch, Silver
Farberware Commercial Nonstick Frying Pan / Fry Pan / Skillet - 10 Inch, Silver
Pan is well made but heavy on the front end which makes it a little awkward when handling. In my opinion would not be user friendly for one who is more use to a lighter pan. It heats up well and fairly quickly. Seems more suited for a gas stove rather than electric especially with the glass top to contend with. Like I said this is a heavy pan and adding food contents for cooking it may be wise to use two hands instead of one for ease of movement. I would not recommend this pan if you are looking for a easier pan to work with. This is only a 10 inch pan and compared to others I have I would reach for this one as a secondary choice. For this purchase you do get a lot of metal for the money but sometimes to much is not a good thing. Cleaning it requires a little more effort mainly because of its weight.
update: I have used this pan now for a couple of months and it has held up well but as previously mentioned by another review the interior flat cooking surface of the pan only measures 6 inches which is smaller than many 8 inch pans....so that part is extremely disappointng.. Overall it will hold more than an 8 inch pan because of its size but if you want to lay down a fish filet or one or two chicken cutlets etc....it just won't work....

Pastel Rainbow Balloons 100 Pack,12 Inches Assorted Color Balloons Premium Party Balloon Colorful Latex Balloons for Baby Shower Wedding Party Decoration
I bought these balloons for my daughters first birthday to make a balloon arch! The quality of these balloons are amazing! To be honest when I opened the package I had some doubts about how many were actually in the bag, but there was 100. Out of the 100 balloons, only two of them had holes in them. I wish there would have been a few more of the salmon-coral coloured balloons! Once blown up they held up really well.. There were many toddlers who decided to pull apart the ballon arch at one point of the party to take the balloons to play in our play house area, and make a balloon filled mosh pit.. only one balloon popped. I will add, that I didn't have them fully inflated, so that may be why they held up as well as they did. Honestly for the price they are 100% worth it. Just make sure you wash your hands when your down handling them in the inflating process, they left our hands very dirty. 100/10 recommend!!

A voir, vraiment.

Il est aussi important de garder en tête que ce film - qui a fait un très gros tabac en Inde - n'était pas conçu au départ comme un bloc buster, et que c'est en fait le bouche à oreille qui a fait son succès, semaine après semaine, mois après mois...

Ecosafeter 2020 New Premium Cervical Contour Memory Foam Pillow- Standard Neck Pillow Cervical Massage orthopedic pillows,Deep Sleep Supportive Washable Hypoallergenic Pillow
I have suffered with neck pain for a long time and wanted one of these pillows because I had stayed at a friend's who had a different but similar foam version, which had allowed me to have some relief from my pain. I was scepticle when this arrived as it looked an odd shape and was compressed packaged. Nevertheless it expanded to its correct size in no time.
I have always slept on feather pillows and didn't think I'd make it through the night with this. I was very happily surprised that in fact the moment I put the pillow in the correct position, the relief from neck tention and pain was amazing. I've slept on it every night since and as a consequence have much better quality of sleap and less pain. I would highly recommend this pillow. It's soft, stays in place, allows you to turn about in your sleep. I have never written a review on here before, but hoped that by doing so, someone else may experience the same relief by having this pillow as I have.
(Note you need to purchase a slightly smaller than standard pillow case to fit it).

Vivo X50 (Glaze Black, 8GB RAM, 128GB Storage) with No Cost EMI/Additional Exchange Offers
The phone is ok, only few observations, which was not highlighted in any features list :

A) No slot for external Storage card, only 2 Nano sim card slot
B) The box comes with 3.5 mm jack earphone, but the phone foesnt have any point, thos is highly a manufacturing and packaging glitch. The USB Type C port will have to be used for both charging and ear phone. Had to order separately an earphone with Type C port.
C) Good thing is the box comes with back cover, so no need to purchase separately, only thing required is the screen guard.
Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 6P, 6-Port Gigabit Router with 1 SFP Port (ER-6P-US)
Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 6P, 6-Port Gigabit Router with 1 SFP Port (ER-6P-US)
I'm a network engineer who owns and operates hundreds of Ubiquiti products across five states. I have almost every model of their EdgeRouter and EdgeSwitch products along with a dozen wireless access points and Unifi switches and controllers sitting here next to me right now.

I'm tired of the shoddy software, the lack of support, and the toxicity and abuse from this company.

Where do I even start?

Ubiquiti is big on marketing, hype, and social media, but sad on support, updates, fixes, and improvements.

Marketing of Ubiquiti products is often intentionally vague, and it can be difficult to figure out exactly what features are supported and what is being improperly implied. There's a huge number of undocumented hardware and software limitations, such as the ERX having a maximum routing throughput of 500Mbps, the ER12 being limited to 700Mbps in certain bridging and VLAN configurations, the ERPOE5's ports 3-5 performance issues because of it's switch, the ERPOE5 not having a VLAN aware switch, some devices are constantly running out of storage space (ERX), the ER-Lite's failing USB drives, and on and on and on and on and on.

I've long suspected that Ubiquiti uses paid shills to post pictures of their products on twitter, facebook, and reddit. Some of their resellers are also strangely involved with the different communities and forums. Don't fall for the hype.

Ubiquiti PoE usually isn't 802.3 standard. Some products are 802.3af/at/bt, some are passive 24V, some are passive 48V, some are passive 12V. Which product supports what? Who knows. Their marketing docs won't tell you. The community has raged about this many times so they finally made a FAQ article about it, but it's out of date and hasn't been updated in years, so some products are missing. Countless numbers of devices have been destroyed by plugging the wrong wireless access point into the wrong switch or power injector.

There are significant disparities between what can be configured through the command line and what can be configured through the Web GUI. For example, OpenVPN has no GUI support at all, but is a highly used and advertised feature. Routing protocols are also very difficult or impossible to configure from the GUI. Troubleshooting from the GUI is almost impossible because there's no way to get many logs or output from status commands and counters.

There are a significant number of configuration commands which are simply broken, resulting in errors such as "The specified configuration node is not valid" or "Set failed". Copy pasting to/from the serial console is not safe or reliable. Sometimes random characters will get lost and the configuration will get corrupted. Holding down the space bar while doing a "show configuration commands" will often result in garbage output.

Early EdgeSwitch models didn't even come with a serial console port. Bonkers.

Security issues abound. For example previous EdgeSwitch OS versions had hidden SNMP "public" writable community. It was over a year before they fixed it, and only when some news stories picked it up. Lots of unpatched security issues, privilege escalation exploits, and design problems.

The official forum is toxic. Some time in 2018/2019 they replaced it and now it's even worse. Questions and comments are regularly censored and deleted. Most questions and bug reports go unanswered. The forum is where hope goes to die.

Most models have no bootloader recovery method, and the "factory restore" procedure leaves custom files and confirmation on the device. A "factory reset" doesn't do a "factory reset".

Committing configuration changes often takes 20-30 seconds, even on high-end models. Using punctuation when naming Port or Address Groups can cause serious bugs. EdgeRouter DDNS doesn't actually work.

48-port EdgeSwitch Lites failing en-mass. 48-port EdgeSwitches blowing power resistors and having other serious electrical problems. Unifi AC AP Lite being fried/burned while plugged into EdgeSwitches.

The ER-Lite has a longstanding well-known unfixed problems with UDP packets being dropped/re-ordered/corrupted. Policy routing doesn't work, documentation abandoned. The vbash shell job control is broken. You can background a process with "&", but "jobs", "fg", and other job control commands are missing. I've had issues where disabling VLAN interfaces did not actually disable the interface and it was still running. Doing a "clear ip ospf process" doesn't actually restart the process. If a new interface is created, such as an IPSec VTI or ethernet VLAN/vif interface, OSPF will not begin advertising the new network, even if it has a network declaration statement. You can't create a firewall rule with multiple source and destination ports. There no 802.11ad/LACP support.

The list of issues bugs and unfinished or non-existent features just goes on and on and on.

Do yourself a favor and just buy something else.
